ŚWIETLICA COMMUNITY CENTER

Our Community Center is a safe meeting space for refugees in crisis, supported by neighbors and volunteers from around the world.

We called this place Świetlica

The name comes from the word “światło” meaning “light.” We illuminate the darkness of war here through multicultural meetings, mutual support, education and immersion in an environment of compassion and care. In ancient Poland and Ukraine, common rooms were considered to be the main room in the house, where women gathered to work, talk and sing together. This is the inspiration for Świetlica.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

We are strengthening one’s internal resources

We believe that everyone, however desperate their circumstances, has something to contribute, and we create an environment where it is possible for everyone to contribute and share with others.

We co-create a community

We create a sense of shared ownership and responsibility in the community, with no distinction between givers and receivers, allowing everyone to contribute according to their resources and abilities.

We help regain agency

We only help as much as is necessary to enable you to regain a sense of agency and control over your life.

We see a person

We strengthen coping mechanisms and cultivate personal development and resilience.

We celebrate human connection and dignity

We treat every person with love, respect and dignity, regardless of their life circumstances.
